Student Projects

SIATech students embark on a unique curriculum that teaches academic elements in a high-technology setting. The main components of literacy, numeracy, social sciences, and science are integrated into a work-like setting that prepares students for a lifetime of learning and success. This integration utilizes industry-standard software to enhance student learning.

Math Program

Our math courses are taught using AutoCAD (Computer Assisted Drafting software) as a learning tool. AutoCAD is used to illustrate complex math concepts, to reinforce basic math skills and to self-discover mathematical relationships.

English Language Arts Program

The SIATech writing program begins with writing based on personal experience and rapidly builds towards writing about the outside world and for a wider audience: business letters and resumes, media reviews, research-based writing, short stories, persuasive essays, and responses to literature. Many of our multimedia senior projects are also based on writing projects: a business plan, play script, online resume portfolio, and historical newsletter.

One assignment is to create a persuasive essay. This assignment prepares students to write to the types of prompts on state standardized tests. Click here to view one student's persuasive essay.

The Treasure Island site has created a school newspaper called The SIATechian. This project features many examples of student work: creative writing, political analysis, a movie review, poetry, and more! Student Profile

Some of the previous examples of SIATech work are from a student at San Diego SIATech at Job Corps, Henry Castillo. Henry is 19 years old and a native of Bolivia. He came to the United States about a year ago and heard about Job Corps through a very good friend who suggested that he enroll to gain a high school diploma, GED and a trade. Henry had not completed high school in his country but knew that he needed a high school diploma if he wanted to further his education. Henry stated that he knew that if he worked hard he could attain his ambition of going to college. He would like to major in biology or computer engineering. Henry will complete his trade in painting in the next couple of months in order to be eligible to graduate in January 2006.

Greg Cohen, Senior Projects teacher, said of Henry, "Henry is always exceedingly polite and is a very talented student. He is very creative, has excellent computer skills and is always willing to help other students navigate the software programs in senior projects. Henry is always looking to take his talents to the next level and this year produced the design for the yearbook cover.”
